Whitman Staff Guide to Penrose Library

This page will show you all the ways the library can work with you and your department

Access to Penrose Collections

Staff Whitman IDs allow access to the building during all open hours. Please consult the library home page for day-to-day hours. Staff can check out any of our circulating materials to borrow books for six weeks and DVDs and videos for six days. Summit and ILL services are available as well.

Newspapers and Magazines

We have a selection of the day's or week's papers including the Union-Bulletin, La Voz, and the Confederated Umatilla Journal on racks in the reference section, as well as the last 3 months of the Union-Bulletin, Tri-Cities Herald, and other local and state papers on the first floor near the cataloging offices.

Recent issues of many different political, science, culture, sports, or news magazines are available in the Allen Reading Room, they are then moved to the Serials stacks in the movable shelving on the first floor.

New York Times

How to set up your NYT account:

  1. Go to accessnyt.com
  2. Search "Whitman College" in the Find School Box
  3. Follow the instructions for if you are on or off-campus. If setting up your account off campus, click the "go" button to enter Whitman's credentials, then create your account. You can use any email to create your account, but you will need a current Whitman email to access this page.
  4. Create an account using your Whitman email. If you have an existing paid individual subscription, you will need to cancel that subscription, and then activate an academic account using that same email address.

You can also watch the video below for more instructions on setting up an account.
