The Importance of Citing Sources

Why is it important to cite your sources?

Citations are important for a number of reasons:

  • Allows readers to find a source you utilized
  • Gives credit to the creators whose work provides a foundation for yours
  • Gives credibility and support to your argument
  • Avoids plagiarism

Many sources have generated citations. But you must be cautious with these! Often, these citations are formatted incorrectly, so always leave time before submitting an assignment to double-check your reference list.

Citation Management Tools

Getting started with Zotero

Zotero is a free, easy-to-use software that can help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources. It functions as a stand-alone desktop application that can be used with Firefox and Chrome. (The Safari browser extension version of Zotero is no longer available due to changes in code of the browser.) It has a group function that enables multiple users to share citations. Install zotero by visiting zotero.org.
