Books about games

An important first step in researching games from other times and cultures is finding out the name of the game, and where and when it would have been played. Some of the books listed below are from the late 19th or early 20th century; you can also find 19th century descriptions of games in our primary source collection about the 1894 World's Fair, which had a Games section of its Anthropological exhibits (the same catalog is also available through JSTOR). These sources may use terminology to describe places and peoples that we would no longer use. Because these sources describe many different games, you can use them to find a game that you can then look up using Sherlock or another database to find more up-to-date descriptions or analysis.
