Getting Your Video Web Ready

Appropriate Video Formats for the Web

The most commonly used file types you will see in online video are .mp4 and .m4v. If you are sharing your video online, you should use one of these file types if possible when you are exporting your file from your video editing software. Both of these are types of MPEG-4 files. The are encoded using the H.264 codec which works well for online streaming.

In iMovie, you can export your video to a web-ready file format by choosing File -> Share -> File -> Audio and Video. The format will be .mp4.

As of this writing, YouTube supported the following video formats for upload:

  • .MOV
  • .MPEG4
  • .MP4
  • .AVI
  • .WMV
  • .FLV
  • 3GPP
  • WebM
